What microbes are in cannabis?

Several types of microbes are commonly screened for to ensure product safety. These typically include:

  1. Bacteria: Common bacteria tested for include Escherichia coli (E. coli), Salmonella species, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

  2. Fungi and Yeasts: Fungal contaminants, such as Aspergillus species, can produce toxic compounds called mycotoxins that can be harmful if inhaled or ingested. Yeasts, such as Candida species, can also be indicators of improper storage or processing conditions.

  3. Mold: Various mold species, including Alternaria, Penicillium, and Cladosporium, can grow on cannabis.
